But to his question...

Subs are always referred to as a boat. Another distinction between a boat and a ship; a boat may never be granted flag status within a fleet. This has lead to some interesting procedures during NATO wargames. I can recall one excercise where a fleet tender (think supply ship) held the flag for the entire battle group of 7 submarines.

I defaulted to a sub being a ship, since it could carry a boot. (CA for "b'oh - t").
Now whaddabout my Alumacraft?????
